Summary: Nathan reflects on his relationship with Haley.
She and I would sleep on a boat and swim in the sea without clothes
Nathan was testing her. He wanted to make sure that if he were going to give her his heart, she wouldn’t hand it back to him in crushed up little pieces.
He had orchestrated Chris’ return to town. Of course, Haley didn’t know that. He was trying to destroy what they had. It was in fact, quite the opposite. He was trying to solidify it.
With rain falling fast on the sea
while she was swimming away, she'd be winking at me
Deep down in his heart, he knew that Haley didn’t have concrete feelings for Chris. His head just needed to be reassured of that fact.
Telling me it would all be okay
out on the horizon and fading away
He trusted Haley enough to figure that out for herself. God, he hoped she would. He would be at a loss with himself if she didn’t.
And I'd swim to the boat and I'd laugh
I gotta get me a Sylvia Plath
People always say that you know when you’ve found your true. It’s when you can’t live without them. He could live without Haley. He just didn’t want to.
